Massive explosion at berth in Ningbo
An explosion occurred on the boxship YM Mobility while it was docked at a container terminal in the Beilun Port area of Zhoushan Port.
The incident is believed to have been caused by a container explosion on board, with no casualties reported.
Surveillance footage, timestamped at around 1:46 pm on Friday (09/08/2024), shows smoke billowing from the ship, followed by a massive blast that ignited a fire and scattered debris. Another video from a greater distance captured the thick clouds of smoke rising after the explosion. The vessel was reportedly docked at the Ningbo Phase 3 Terminal, with some sources indicating that the cargo involved was glycerin.
In response, the Ningbo Maritime Search and Rescue Center activated an emergency plan, dispatching patrol boats, three fire tugboats, and shore-based fire department units to the scene.
The YM Mobility, a Liberia-flagged containership built in 2011, is owned by Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming and has a capacity of 6,589 TEU.
