Dubai Customs handles 22 million bags at Dubai airports in H1 2023
The operational milestone highlights Dubai Customs’ advanced services, which significantly reduced travel time for passengers passing through the emirate’s airports in 2023.
Dubai Customs‘ Airport customs centres, overseen by the authority’s Passenger Operations Department, have efficiently handled over 22.139 million travel bags in the first half of 2023.

The operational milestone highlights Dubai Customs’ advanced services, which have significantly reduced travel time for passengers passing through the emirate’s airports, ensuring smooth and hassle-free journeys.
According to the authority, the advanced inspection and scanning devices at the customs centres paired with the expertise of inspectors in interpreting body language, have proven highly effective in foiling attempts to smuggle prohibited substances.
These cutting-edge tools ensure a high level of efficiency and prevent the concealment of illicit items in passengers’ luggage or on their persons through thorough inspections and monitoring.
Diversified solutions
In addition to its operational achievements, Dubai Customs’ Passenger Operations Department also plays a key role in facilitating trade and attracting cargo carriers of valuable goods through its Pre-Export Initiative, a unique service allowing the completion of re-export transactions and advanced storage of shipments before departure, using customs warehouses for storage.
The service, currently implemented as a pilot programme, has already benefited 382 participants.
Furthermore, the department offers a Self-Handling Service, providing 24/7 delivery of customs documents to companies through a self-service option using smart QR code boxes. Within just six months, 3,601 clients have taken advantage of this service.
Additionally, the department’s Electronic Control System, an innovative and intelligent operational mechanism, seamlessly integrates inspection departments with electronic systems and monitoring mechanisms.
This ensures the efficiency of inspection operations through skilled personnel and data analysis, thereby achieving high-quality outputs with minimal negative incidents.

The Director of Dubai Customs’ Passenger Operations Department, Ibrahim Al Kamali, emphasised the department’s vital role in facilitating customs procedures for travellers, ensuring their satisfaction, providing optimal reception, and enhancing the services offered to them.
These efforts reflect the UAE’s civilised image, as well as boost Dubai’s reputation as a leading tourism and business destination.
Furthermore, the department is constantly developing new strategies and measures to maintain a smooth flow of travellers through Dubai’s airports and safeguard the nation’s security by controlling narcotics and prohibited substances.
