Overview

SeaLand, formerly known as Maersk SeaLand, was a prominent American intra-regional container shipping company based in Miramar, Florida. It operated ocean and intermodal services using container ships, trucks, and rail, serving customers across 29 countries in the Americas. SeaLand was recognized for pioneering containerization and efficient logistics solutions before its integration into Maersk.

History

SeaLand was founded in 1956 as Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation by Malcom McLean, who is widely credited with inventing containerization, revolutionizing global trade. The company was renamed Sea-Land Service, Inc. in 1960 and quickly became a leader in the container shipping industry, introducing standardized containers and intermodal transport. In 1999, Maersk acquired Sea-Land’s international container business, integrating it into its global network. The SeaLand brand continued to operate as a regional carrier in the Americas, focusing on intra-regional trade and efficient logistics solutions. In 2014, Maersk revived the SeaLand brand to serve the Americas market, emphasizing agility and customer service. SeaLand offered services between North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. In 2023, the SeaLand brand was retired and fully integrated into Maersk, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential names in container shipping.
