Overview
The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), headquartered in Mumbai, is India’s largest shipping company and a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. SCI operates a diversified fleet of 80 ships totaling 5.9 million DWT, serving both national and international lines. The company employs over 550 people and reported revenues of ?5,098.59 crore (US$600 million) in 20221718.
History
SCI was formed on 2 October 1961 by the amalgamation of Eastern Shipping Corporation and Western Shipping Corporation, starting with 19 ships and a total capacity of 0.19 million DWT. Over the decades, SCI expanded its fleet and diversified into tankers, bulk carriers, LPG/ammonia carriers, chemical carriers, container vessels, and offshore supply vessels. In 1973 and 1986, Jayanti Shipping Company and Mogul Lines Limited were merged into SCI, further strengthening its position. By the 1980s, SCI’s fleet strength crossed 5 million DWT. The company played a key role in supporting India’s oil imports and exports and operated the country’s first LNG carrier in 2004. SCI was granted public limited company status in 1992 and ?Navratna? status in 2010. The company has faced challenges due to global shipping downturns and competition from private players, leading to fleet rationalization and restructuring. In 2019, the Government of India approved the privatization of SCI, but the process was delayed by geopolitical events. SCI continues to modernize its fleet and expand into offshore and coastal shipping, supporting India’s maritime vision.
