History
Founded in 1978 by Jacques Saad?, CMA CGM began as a small shipping company serving Lebanon and France. The company expanded rapidly through the 1980s and 1990s, acquiring key competitors and entering new markets. In 1996, the merger with Compagnie G?n?rale Maritime (CGM), a French state-owned company established in 1855, marked a pivotal moment, creating one of the world’s largest shipping groups. Throughout the 2000s, CMA CGM continued its expansion, acquiring Delmas (Africa’s largest shipping line), ANL (Australian National Line), and APL (American President Lines) in 2016. The company weathered industry downturns, such as the 2008 financial crisis, by restructuring and focusing on operational efficiency. In the 2010s, CMA CGM invested heavily in digitalization, launching the world’s first LNG-powered mega container ship, CMA CGM Jacques Saad?, in 2020. The acquisition of CEVA Logistics in 2019 diversified its services into air cargo and integrated logistics. As of 2025, CMA CGM remains a family-controlled business, led by Rodolphe Saad?, and is a pioneer in green shipping, aiming for carbon neutrality by 20501.
