Overview

Ocean Network Express (ONE), headquartered in Singapore, is a major global container shipping company with a fleet of over 220 vessels and a total capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. ONE covers more than 100 countries and is known for its distinctive magenta-colored containers and ships. The company offers a wide range of services, including Very Large Container Ships (10,000–20,000 TEU) and Ultra Large Container Ships (over 20,000 TEU), and is recognized for digital innovation and sustainability.

History

ONE was established in 2017 as a joint venture merging the container shipping businesses of three Japanese shipping giants: K Line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, founded 1919), MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, founded 1884), and NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha, founded 1885). This strategic move was prompted by industry overcapacity and the need for greater efficiency. The integration created the world’s sixth-largest container shipping company at the time. ONE began operations in April 2018, combining the fleets, networks, and expertise of its parent companies. The company quickly became known for its magenta branding and focus on digital transformation, launching advanced e-commerce and AI-driven fleet management platforms. Despite initial operational challenges, ONE achieved profitability by 2020, benefiting from strong freight rates and improved efficiency. The company continues to invest in sustainable shipping, ordering new LNG-powered vessels and setting a target for net-zero emissions by 205034.
