Book the wrong truck and the problems start before your cargo leaves the UAE: machinery that can't be loaded into a closed box, pallets exposed to sun and dust on an open flatbed, or a 40-ton trailer sent for a 2-ton delivery. On a 1,000–2,000 km cross-border trip into Saudi Arabia, the vehicle choice affects safety, cost, loading time and customs inspection at Al Batha.

This guide explains the main vehicle types used from the UAE to Saudi Arabia: flatbed trailers, curtain side trailers, closed box trucks, lowbeds and more. It covers what each carries, how each loads, and how to choose. It also clears up a common question about box truck rental from the UAE to Saudi Arabia.

Curtain side trailer (tautliner)

A curtain side trailer has a rigid roof and frame, with heavy-duty PVC curtains along both sides that slide open. Inside, it works like a closed trailer. Opened up, it can be loaded by forklift from the side along its full length.

Typical specification: about 13.6 m long, carrying around 24–26 standard GCC pallets (1.2 × 1.0 m) or more euro pallets, depending on the trailer and the load.

Why it's popular from Dubai to Riyadh:

  • Fast loading and unloading from the side and rear, even where there's no loading dock
  • Protection from sun, sand and rain compared with a flatbed
  • Easy inspection. Customs and SFDA officers at Al Batha can see the cargo quickly
  • Ideal for mixed pallets in FTL or LTL loads

Best for: FMCG, beverages, building products, packaged chemicals (with DG rules), retail stock and general palletised cargo. If you search for a curtain side trailer from Dubai to Riyadh, this is the standard choice for commercial pallets.

Watch for: load securing. Curtains are not load-bearing walls, so cargo must be strapped or blocked inside.

Flatbed trailer

A flatbed is an open platform trailer with no sides or roof. Cargo is loaded from the top or sides by crane or forklift and secured with chains, straps and edge protectors, and covered with tarpaulins when needed.

Typical specification: about 12–13.6 m deck, with payloads commonly around 20–25+ tons depending on the configuration and Saudi weight limits.

Best for:

  • Steel coils, beams and rebar
  • Pipes, spools and oil and gas equipment
  • Generators, compressors and machinery
  • Precast concrete and building materials
  • Boats, vehicles and other items that need overhead lifting

Why choose a flatbed from the UAE to Saudi Arabia: it's the only practical option for cargo that must be crane-lifted or is too wide or awkward for a box. Many industrial shipments to the Eastern Province (Abu Dhabi to Dammam) move on flatbeds.

Watch for: weather and dust exposure (use tarpaulins), correct lashing and SABER requirements for machinery and electrical equipment (see our SABER guide).

Lowbed and extendable trailers

For heavy and over-dimensional cargo, a lowbed trailer's lower deck height allows taller items to stay within height limits. Extendable trailers carry long loads.

  • Excavators, loaders and cranes
  • Transformers and large plant equipment
  • Project cargo for energy, utilities and construction

Over-dimensional loads need route surveys, permits in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and sometimes escort vehicles and travel-time restrictions. JW Marine & Freight's project cargo team manages these end to end.

Closed box trailers and box trucks

A box trailer or box truck is fully enclosed with rigid walls and rear doors. It offers the best security and protection.

Sizes commonly used:

  • 3-ton box truck: small consignments, urgent deliveries
  • 7-ton and 10-ton box trucks: medium loads, retail distribution
  • 13.6 m box trailer: full loads of cartons and pallets

Best for: electronics, mobile phones, appliances, high-value retail, e-commerce parcels, documents and anything that must stay sealed and secure.

"Box truck rental from the UAE to Saudi Arabia": what it really means

Many people search for box truck rental from the UAE to Saudi Arabia expecting to rent a truck like a car. In practice, cross-border trucking works as a dedicated hire with driver for an international trip:

  • You book a box truck (3, 7 or 10 tons, or a trailer) exclusively for your cargo
  • It loads in the UAE, crosses at Al Ghuwaifat–Al Batha and delivers to your Saudi address
  • Customs, transit documents and the driver's border formalities are arranged by the operator

What you can't usually do is rent a UAE truck to drive around Saudi Arabia making local deliveries. Saudi transport rules allow foreign trucks to deliver goods from abroad to their destination and take return loads, but not to carry domestic loads between Saudi cities. If you need distribution inside the Kingdom, we arrange compliant Saudi transport for those legs.

Side loader trucks

Side loaders lift containers on and off the truck using their own side-mounted cranes. That's ideal when the delivery site has no crane or reach stacker. JW Marine & Freight operates 20', 40' and 45' side loader options, which are rare in the market and useful for sea-to-land cargo from Jebel Ali.

How to choose: five questions

  1. How is the cargo loaded and unloaded? Forklift from the side (curtain side), dock or pallet jack (box), or crane (flatbed/lowbed)?
  2. What are the dimensions and weight? Anything over standard height, width or weight needs a lowbed and permits.
  3. Does it need protection? Sun, dust, rain, theft or temperature. Box, curtain side or reefer.
  4. How much is there? A few pallets (LTL or a small box truck) or a full load (FTL trailer). See FTL vs LTL.
  5. What's at the delivery site? Docks, forklifts, cranes, access roads and gate restrictions.

Once you know the truck, see road transport rates from Dubai to Riyadh for what affects the price.
