Overview

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), headquartered in Hong Kong, is a major international container transportation and logistics company. OOCL operates 59 vessels with capacities ranging from 2,992 to 21,413 TEUs, serving over 70 countries and 200 ports worldwide. History

OOCL was founded by C.Y. Tung in 1947 as Orient Overseas Line, operating the first all-Chinese crewed ship between Hong Kong and Europe and the US. In 1969, OOCL became the first Asian-based shipping line to transport containerized cargo across the Pacific, leading to its current name. The company expanded rapidly, acquiring Furness Withy and other shipping lines, and at its peak operated over 150 ships with a total cargo capacity exceeding 10 million tons. OOCL faced bankruptcy in the mid-1980s but was rescued by a consortium led by the Bank of China and China Merchants. In 1996, C.C. Tung became chairman. OOCL has been a pioneer in technology, launching the world’s first integrated logistics and container terminal business, and in 2003, took delivery of the then-largest container ship, OOCL Shenzhen. In 2017, OOCL’s parent company, OOIL, received a $6.3 billion takeover bid from COSCO Shipping, completed in 2018. In recent years, OOCL has launched record-breaking vessels, such as the 24,188 TEU OOCL Spain, and continues to invest in green technology and digital transformation.
