Overview

COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Company), now part of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, is one of the world’s largest shipping and logistics conglomerates. Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Beijing, COSCO operates a fleet of 1,114 ships, including 365 dry bulk vessels, a container fleet with a capacity of 1.58 million TEUs, and 120 tankers. The group calls at over 1,000 ports worldwide and is a leader in both container and bulk shipping.

History

COSCO was established in 1961 as a state-owned enterprise to support China’s growing trade. Its first vessel, Guanghua, made its maiden voyage to Jakarta in 1961. In the 1970s, COSCO played a key role in opening commercial sea routes between China and the United States. The company expanded rapidly, winning international contracts and becoming China’s largest dry bulk carrier. In the 1990s, COSCO faced regulatory scrutiny in the US but continued to grow through fleet expansion and modernization. In 2016, COSCO merged with China Shipping Group to form China COSCO Shipping Corporation, creating one of the world’s largest shipping conglomerates. The combined entity manages a vast fleet, extensive port operations, and logistics services. In Q1 2025, COSCO Shipping Holdings reported EBIT of $2.3 billion (up 66% year-on-year) and net profit of .8 billion (up 73%), driven by higher freight rates and increased shipping volumes. COSCO continues to invest in green technology and digitalization, maintaining its position as a global leader in shipping and logistics.
